My husband and I met you at the Farmers Market this morning, we bought 2 jars of jam and both are delicious. We plan to purchase more for Christmas treats for coworkers and neighbors. I found your site to be charming. I enjoyed reading about your journey to fulfill your dreams. (and my tastebuds)

  13. mindy says:

Lauren, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Glad you are enjoying the preserves, they are really fresh. Meeting folks at the market is what inspires how and what we grow. We want to keep things fun, but always with an eye on health. Thanks again for the post and stop by again just to say “Hi”.

I was wondering what to do to the salmon I was gong to BBQ last night, when I remembered the pesto I'd purchased from Sunnyside LOCAL.  If it tasted so great on a cracker, I hoped it would be good on the fish….and it was absolutely delicious!  I just spread some on each side of the filet, and grilled it.  Everybody loved it!
Tonight I'm going to try it tossed with some roasted veggies ๐Ÿ™‚

Dear Mindy and Jane, Thank you so much for being rays of sunshine on an overcast Saturday morning. Today, I tasted the Vanilla Kumquat Marmalade. Wow! What an explosion of fresh, bright, and comforting flavors that lit up my nose and taste buds. Instantly, I was reminded how vibrant food tasted especially when i was a child. I love the delightful smell of the warm sweetness of a whole vanilla bean, the orange kumquat peels burst with tartness and bright citrus notes with each bite and the smooth golden honey-colored pectin speckled with vanilla bean are a wonderful symphony of flavors and colors.

It was lovely to meet you this morning. Thank you for all of the information about your plants.

    Hope to see you soon!

It was a pleasure meeting you ladies a few weeks ago when I purchased a jar of your scrumptious Organic Strawberry Lavender Jelly. One of you delightful ladies, recommended I try the jelly atop ice cream…wow, what a mistake ๐Ÿ˜€ I am absolutely addicted to this combination! The light lavender scent and taste made ice cream even more delicious. I am excited to purchasing some of your veggies and cases of your jellies :).
    Continued Success to you all

Tarragon is great with fish. When we get fresh trout, I cook it whole with sprigs of tarragon and very very thinly sliced lemon in the center cavity. Oh and maybe a couple of pats of butter or a drizzle of olive oil.

  22. mindy says:

Greg, I love the sweet, unique flavor tarragon adds to food. Your suggestion is simple and sounds oh, so tastey. Thanks for your support of SunnysideLOCAL!

  23. mindy says:

Paola, we love imput from our customers. Jane is always ready with a suggestion for using the jams so you can blame her for your new addiction. Look forward to seeing you again.

    Recipe for Barbecue Sauce

I modify this recipe every time I make it, using what is available at any given time. I try to find good locally grown tomatoes and frequently replace the tomato sauce in the recipe with chopped up fresh tomatoes, because of the long simmer time, this works fine. I make my own tomato sauce during the summer when good quality tomatoes are available and freeze it in quart portions for use during the rest of the year.

Lately I have been experimenting with other fresh ingredients to enhance the sweetness a bit to offset the heat of the chile peppers. The last batch I threw in a few fresh figs and the result was great. This week I’m going to try some great apples from Oak Glen and a tiny bit of cinnamon. These are added to the existing recipe, nothing else is eliminated.

It is a modification of the basic sauce recipe in Steve Raichlenโ€™s โ€œBarbecue Bibleโ€.

You will need: 2 medium onions minced, 2 fresh pasilla peppers minced, 10 cloves of garlic minced, 1 cup tomato ketchup, 1 cup tomato sauce, 1 bottle beer (preferably dark), 6 tablespoons cider vinegar, 6 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 4 tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice, 4 tablespoons molasses, 8 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar (or more), 5 teaspoons whole grain mustard, 2 teaspoons dry mustard, 2 teaspoons Ancho chile powder (I use more), 2 teaspoons Chipotle chile powder (more or less), 2 teaspoons New Mexico green or red chile powder (more or less). Adjust these amounts to your preference for heat. Brown the onions in olive oil. After they are brown, add the pasillas and cook for a few minutes, then add the garlic briefly, just a minute or two. Then add all the ingredients to a big pot and bring to a simmer. After an hour use a stick blender to puree the contents of the pot until almost smooth (a little texture is nice). Now just let it simmer very low as long as you can. You want it to thicken up a bit. I generally let mine simmer for 3 hours or so, stirring often, donโ€™t let the bottom get scorched.

I purchased a beautiful strawberry plant from you at the Phelan Farmer’s Mkt. Mine has to be planted in a large container. Is Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil ok to use? Do I add blood meal or bone meal to it? Obviously, I haven’t planted it yet. So I can buy the type of potting soil you recommend. I plan to put gravel and broken clay pots in the bottom for drainage before adding the potting soil. Also, please give instructions for covering the long runner with daughter plant. Where do I put the soil on the runner? I think you told me to not cover the leaves on the end. Thanks for your help! I love your website, photos, and especially the plants, etc. that you bring to us!

Your lovely confections are absolutely divine! My Mom recently treated me with a box of your Blackberry Balsamic Caramels and I am in love! I don’t see them here in your shop, will you have some at the local Farmer’s Market?

  46. mindy says:

Hi Kelley, Thrilled that you have become a fan of the Balsamic Blackberry Caramels. Our production goes down slightly during the summer relative to hot temperatures.
